Iowa Speedway Will Expand Its Capacity

auto racing newspapers

Iowa Speedway is an oval 7/8 mile motor racing track located in Newton, Iowa. It's just 30 miles from Des Moines. Iowa Speedway offers more than 25,000 permanent seating, as well as a multi-tiered viewing area for RVs along the backstretch. To meet growing demand, the track will expand in the 2015 racing season. In addition to expanding the permanent seating capacity, plans include adding a SAFER barrier and expanding the infield beer garden.

Expanding funding

The approval of $8 million more state funding could be crucial to the Iowa Speedway's expansion. Newton Democrat Dan Kelley hopes to convince lawmakers to put public dollars behind the project. The proposal calls on the speedway to construct a new grandstand and provide permanent seating areas for fans. It is expected it will attract a sprint car race with a national championship. It will however be difficult to raise funds for capacity expansion.

The answer may lie with a new owner. A third option for refinancing deals is for the Speedway to be developed by a new owner. Doug Fritz has been appointed CEO of the Speedway. Fritz was selected by Wallace to lead the track. Wallace's new owner, however, has a greater chance of the expansion being completed. A new group of people could have a different view and make it easier that the speedway achieves its vision.

Future races at the track: Plans

IndyCar will be returning to the Iowa Speedway next season after missing it for 14 years. The short oval will host a doubleheader on July 22-23. Hy-Vee was the broker. It is a Newton-based grocery-store chain. They will be the entitlement sponsors for both races. Team Penske has also been involved in the efforts to increase HyVee’s presence throughout the series.

NTT IndyCar Series is interested to return to Iowa Speedway. While there are only four oval events on the series' 16-race schedule this year, the series has been moving away from such venues in recent years. Oval races tend to be closer racing and require more mental stamina. Iowa Speedway is a short oval which has hosted IndyCar race since 2007. IndyCar was last at the track in 2007. It is currently not on the schedule for 2021.

Plans to install a SAFER Barrier on the track

The Midwest Roadside Safety Facility developed the SAFER Barrier. It is located at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. This barrier protects fans from race cars. Midwest Roadside Safety Facility worked with tracks to create barriers that would reduce the impact of race cars on retaining walls. The first SAFER Barrier was installed by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2002. It is made from foam and steel. It is being retrofitted to existing concrete walls at all the tracks in the country.

The barrier was not tested in its initial stages. It did not take into account that tires might burst prior to hitting the barrier. This could have affected the car's contact with it. The tires were less in contact with the wall than they expected due to this. McGehee struck the wall with his left rear tire, which lost air pressure. He then spun his car, causing him to lose control and cause it to crash into the wall. Before the crash, his other tires went flat.

Plans to expand and improve the infield beer Garden

Iowa Speedway plans to build an infield beer park in its turn four area. With Casey's General Stores Fan Walk wristbands, fans will be able to access the new expanded beer garden. Speedway's new addition will feature ice cold beer, seating in casual settings, tailgate games, laser-tag, and an inflatable course. Fans can relax in a new beer garden after a hard day at the track.

Fans and racegoers can both win with the Speedway's new ownership. The speedway's aging infield beer garden has become overcrowded. This track is a favourite of locals and hosts the premier drag racing event. The new owners intend to expand the beer gardens. NASCAR has taken over the track since 2006.

Most of the fastest cars are very light. This allows them speed up quickly and to gain lots of speed. This also means that they have less power, which restricts how far they are able to travel in a short time. So they need to use energy efficiently.

Engines power most modern-day racing cars. These engines look similar to regular passenger vehicles. These engines are powered by compressed air, instead of petrol. This is because petrol doesn't have enough power to make cars go very fast.
