We'll be discussing the birth of NASCAR and Bill France's contribution to the creation of the sport in this article. The first race, a 200-lap affair in June 1949, also saw the introduction of a new division. This new division was called Strictly Stock. It was a departure form the Modified or "jalopy" racing styles of the past.

Jim Roper wins first nascar race

Kansas is where NASCAR's history began. Jim Roper won the first race in Kansas' Strictly Stock Division on June 19, 1949. Roper won the 200-lap race at the 0.75-mile Charlotte Speedway dirt track near Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. His NASCAR Hall of Fame entry, which was left blank during the race, now has it on display.

Roper's real name was Chris Jim, which was a nickname he picked up from racing. He led 47 laps of the race, before Glenn Dunaway, North Carolina's driver, took the lead in the final lap and won. Overheating conditions and rough track conditions were the main causes of many cars breaking one or more wheels. There were 33 drivers in this race.

Glenn Dunaway wins first nascar race

Glenn Dunaway won NASCAR’s first race at Charlotte in 1949. Dunaway was not pleased with the outcome. After failing the post-race inspection, Dunaway's car was disqualified by NASCAR officials for illegal modifications to its springs. Hubert Westmoreland sued NASCAR. But the judge dismissed the case.

In response to Dunaway's comments about illegal modifications, he replied, "Just one of those deals," and went to the Alamo Plaza to collect his winnings. Later, Westmoreland filed a lawsuit against NASCAR, demanding US$10,000. A judge dismissed the suit, stating that NASCAR was entitled to its own rules.

Slick Smith crashes into Slick Flock's Hudson

The NSCRA ran stock car races and was a threat to NASCAR's dominance early in its history. Smith was the head the newly formed NSCRA. Big Bill France then organized a one-off racing event for 150 sticklystock cars in Charlotte on June 19. With little notice, the race was put together in an overnight session.

Flock was leading Flock's field when his Buick broke a wheel. Slick Smith was his teammate and helped Flock push Hudson to safety. But, NASCAR rules did not permit the car to be driven into the pits.

Bill France's contribution to the founding of NASCAR

Bill France was the president of NASCAR and played a pivotal role in shaping this sport. With the help of lucrative corporate sponsorships and a billion-dollar TV contract, France helped to make the organization a global one. He is actually the one who started the modern era NASCAR.

France was born on a farm in Washington, D.C. France became interested in cars and motorbikes while growing up. He was 6'5" tall, weighing in at around 230 lbs. In his spare time, he also participated in a local dirt track circuit.

Richard Petty's farewell tour

Richard Petty was just a boy when he attended the Daytona 500 as a spectator to his father's race. He was just a few weeks away from his 12th Birthday. His father had plans to enter the field in his 1948 Buick Roadmaster. This was a long, heavy car with a big straight-eight motor. Richard was a huge fan of the car and wanted a go.

Richard Petty is an NASCAR legend. He was known for his cowboy hats with feathers, wraparound glasses and beautiful smiles. Petty Enterprises was also his ownership. This racing team won 266 events. While he retired as a racer in 1992, he's still active at the track. He works for Petty Enterprises and is a spokesperson of NASCAR.
