ISM Raceway Capacity

biggest nascar races

The ISM Raceway has a total seating capacity of 42,000. It is a popular spot for motorsports fans, earning more than $473million annually. Major renovations were made to the track in 2010, and another one was completed by 2017.

Capacity of seating reduced to 42,000

ISM Raceway was established in 1971 and has undergone major renovations to increase its capacity to 42,000 seats. Renovations included the creation of a fanzone, reconfiguration of the pit area, and the relocation/finish line. New grandstand accommodates around 42,000. The track's grandstand seats were removed and a new start/finish line was installed, reducing the seating capacity to around 42,000 fans.

The track was able to raise ticket prices by 30% after several rounds of cuts. Some fans consider the price well-worth it. The last round of reductions saw the raceway's seating capacity go from 112,000 to 60,000 seats, and officials plan to remove some backstretch grandstands. Although most races are now limited, ISM is still one of NASCAR's best venues to see the race. Moreover, the track is still home to two Sprint Cup races every year - the first one in February and the last in April. The oval is three-quarters of a mile long and includes seats at the front, as well as turns.

Grandstand renovations

ISM Raceway's grandstands are currently being renovated. The Bobby Allison grandstand saw more seating added in 2005. They are located close to Turns 1 & 2.

The renovations will add 45,000 more seats to the grandstand and create 54 additional suites. A pedestrian tunnel will connect the grandstand areas to the infield. The infield will have virtually everything upgraded or replaced. Internet connectivity will be improved throughout the infield, which is a huge draw for many fans. Most of the infield construction will begin after the April 7 IndyCar race. Construction should be completed before the 2020 season.

The start/finish line was moved to a dogleg

The start/finish line at ISM Raceway has been moved to a dogleg, which was once the track's second turn. The new location allows for more aggressive line changes and an expansion of the inside apron. The new layout will likely make this track a paradise for restarters. On this track, drivers Kyle Busch (Kevin Harvick) are expected to compete in the title race. Double-file restarts will increase the excitement of races and allow drivers to be more creative.

ISM Racingway's new configuration will enable it to grow its capacity by approximately 8 percent. The preferred groove was previously the outside line. The average speed at which cars that start on the outside were held back was 94 percent. Only 40% of cars that began in the inner groove were held back. This new configuration gives even-numbered cars the option to start with several options.
